& Picks Up A Vocal Event w Dave Matthews for “I'm Alive”
Nashville: He was up late jamming with good friend and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller gearing up for CMT's “Crossroads” taping tonight at the Ryman Auditorium. He was so lost in the moment, Kenny Chesney completely forgot the Academy of Country Music nominations were being announced. But that didn't stop the California-based organization from recognizing the only performer who's sold over a mllion tickets each of the past eight years with another Entertainer of the Year nod as well as a Top Male Vocalist and Vocal Event for “I'm Alive,” his duet with Dave Matthews.
“You know, you're so busy making the music, you don't always remember to check in with the business behind the music,” explains the man who's spent the last three months immersed in editing “Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3-D,” which opens across the country April 21. “But don't think it means any less… or I'm any less thrilled to hear my name called. I got into this to move people, to connect - and I'm very grateful for all the opportunities the music and the fans have given me. When you put all those things together - and your peers recognize that work and that passion - well, that's a big part of why these awards and these nominations matter.”
Moving from a heart-to-heart talk with Miller for “Crossroads” to a full camera rehearsal at the Ryman, Chesney got to share the moment with the man whose “Rockin' Me” provided the second verse to “I Go Back,” one of Chesney's definive hits from the 6-times platinum When The Sun Goes Down. Though no major tour is on the books for 2010, Chesney is slated to play the Houston Rodeo this Thursday, March 4, and finish the multi-dimensional sound mix for “Summer in 3-D.”
“To sit around and talk with someone like Steve Miller about life, music, the career, the dream, that makes for a pretty amazing day,” says the man who started out a songwriter from Luttrell, TN. “He's seen so much, made music that's a part of who I was growing up… and his perspective on all of it, the importance of these things really struck me. It makes it even sweeter in a way, because this is someone who truly understands what goes into things like this…
“And it reminds me, too, that music isn't about labels, if you're making it about the right things. This is Dave Matthews first ACM nomination… and he is an artist from a whole other world musically, who's my friend and someone who shares the truth of what 'I'm Alive' is saying with me… and we didn't worry about anything else but that, and here we are! To me, this is the lesson of all of it.”
As “Aint Back Yet,” the end theme recorded for “Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3-D,” scorching the charts - it is #15 bullet this week - Chesney's music is rocking as hard as the movie that captures 5 stadium shows on last year's precedent-setting Corona Extra Sun City Carnival Tour. Though no word is official, Chesney will no doubt be on hand in Las Vegas April 18 when the annual Academy of Country Music Awards show is broadcast live in CBS.
