TAYLOR LEADS COUNTRY NOMINEES FOR PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS
Nashville, TN – November 11, 2009 – Taylor Swift won top honors at last night’s 57th Annual BMI Country Awards, taking home the prestigious Song of the Year award for the second consecutive year. “Love Story,” which Taylor wrote by herself, was honored for receiving more radio airplay in the past year than any other country song. Taylor was also honored with BMI’s Song of the Year award in 2008 (for “Teardrops On My Guitar”), when she became the youngest songwriter in any genre to win the honor. Taylor is the first female songwriter in history to win back-to-back BMI Song of the Year awards, in any genre.
“Love Story” topped Billboard’s Country, Pop and A/C charts in the US, and became a global sensation, reaching #1 in countries including the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. “Love Story” is also the most downloaded country single in US history.
Earlier this year Taylor received a BMI Pop Award for “Teardrops,” and was honored with the BMI President’s Award, given only on “unique occasions when an individual has distinctly and profoundly influenced the industry.” Past recipients of the President’s Award include Merv Griffin, Brian Wilson, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Willie Nelson, Harlan Howard, Pete Townsend, and Alabama. Last month Taylor was honored for the second time as Artist/Writer of the Year by the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
Last weekend, Taylor pulled double duty as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live, garnering the show’s highest ratings of the season and wowing some of the nation’s toughest critics with her comedic as well as her musical talent.
“Taylor Swift pulled a Timberlake this weekend....Swift did a masterful job in both roles [as host and musical guest],” raved Rolling Stone, who praised her “impressive impersonations” and “her spirited renditions” of her hits, that “showcased her magnetic stage presence.”
“Taylor Swift proved to be this season’s best Saturday Night Live host so far,” wrote Entertainment Weekly. “Admirably resilient in a wide variety of sketch roles….Swift was always up for the challenge, seemed to be having fun, and helped the rest of the cast nail the punch lines.”
