Here's my UFC pal Josh....he's back after seeing the big and growing UFC pay per view from oakland...
The UFC hits Oakland in this fantastic night of competitive fights. There were several heart pumping fights that had fans on the edges of their seats. However, I'm going to jump right to the main event.Anderson "The Spider" Silva vs. Chael SonnenThese two intense competitors have swapped some pretty barbed words recently, with the majority of them coming from the seemingly over-confident Chael Sonnen. However, his words were put to action on the night of August 7th, and Anderson Silva was not about to back down. Round 1) Both fighters come out looking to find range. Sonnen is cautious of the deadly striking (arguably the best striking in MMA) possessed by Silva. Silva throws some kicks to the leg and body of Sonnen. Sonnen snaps a few kicks. Silva catches a kick from Sonnen, and slings it upward, causing Sonnen to do a turning roll that drew a few ooh's and ah's from the audience. Silva snaps jabs repeatedky into the face of Sonnen.Out of nowhere, Sonnen (being at a huge disadvantage on the feet) snaps a straight right that knocks Silva off balance, sending him back. Sonnen lands another right, Silva leaves his hands at his waist, and lets Sonnen punch him in the face. Silva shows no respect to the striking of Sonnen. Sonnen flurries, and shoots a successful double leg takedown. Sonnen weaves into Silva's half guard, traps an arm, and fires away. Silva turns and shrimps out, giving Sonnen his back. Sonen attempts to sink in a rear-naked choke, but is unsuccessful. Sonnen lands several hammerfists to the sides of Silva's head. Silva regains halfhuard, but is still taking a pounding. Sonnen passes to side control, only to be reclaimed by the full guard of Silva. Sonnen stands, and swings down a right haymaker that hits Silva flush. Sonnen passes to halfguard, and ends the round in dominant fashion. Round 2) Silva lands two brutal leg kicks. Silva jumps into a teep kick, only to be taken down by Sonnen. Sonnen weaves throught halfguard and guard as he lands several shots. In half gaurd, Sonnen begins to slap both sides of Silva's head simultaneously. Silva regains full guard, and swings his hips up for the armbar, but is denied by Sonnen. Silva surrenders his back in order to stand up. He loccks up, and attempts a kimura on Sonnen's left arm. Silva threatens to use the kimura to sweep, but instead drops for a heelhook. Sonnen makes it out of the attempt, and is met with the sound of the bell. Round 3) Silva lights up Sonnen with a swift left hook. Silva rotates into a powerful spinning back kick that lands directly on Sonnen's abdomen. Sonnen shoots the single, lands it, and works for a kimura. Sonnen pepers the champion with knees and punches. Silva claims full guard, and gets tagged with a one-two. Sonnen lands some short elbows that fail to amount to much damage. Silva locks up a body triangle from bottom, but opens it to look for a triangle. Sonnen avoids the triangle, goes to side-control, but Silva climbs back to guard. Sonnen places a forearm across Silva's throat in an attempt to choke him. Silva modifies his guard and rids himself of the forearm choke. Silva lands an elbow from bottom. The bell sounds. Round 4) Sonnen charges Silva, and gets caught with a left hand. Silva slams his shins all into the sides of Sonnen's body and legs. Sonnen is rocked. Silva throws a backing-upward elbow (just like he knocked out Tony Fryklund with several years ago), but misses. Silva, giving Sonnen a taste of his own medicine, takes down Sonnen, and passes to half-guard. Sonnen swiftly sweeps into top position in Silva's half-guard. Sonnen covers the mouth of Silva in an attempt to disrupt his breathing, and lands several hammerfists to the head of Silva. Silva gets butterfly guard, and eats hard shots from Sonnen. Silva seems unfazed by most of the punches Sonnen throws from here. Silva lands an elbow from bottom that cuts the corner of Sonnen's left eye. Sonnen is bleeding heavily. Sonnen rests on top for a little bit. The bell sounds. Round 5) Sonnen's corner manage to subdue the bleeding with vaseline. Sonnen shoots the double leg, but gets rejected by Silva. Silva allows Sonnen to stand. Silva slips and stumbles. Sonnen lands a right as Silva tries to stand, and jumps into his guard. Sonnen lands several strikes on the man known as "The Spider". Sonnen stacks Silva's guard in attempt to land further ground 'n pound, But Silva locks in a triangle. Sonnen quickly falls back, swings his right leg over Silva's stomach in a desperate attempt to pry out of the triangle, but Silva extends Sonnen's arm into an armbar inside of the triangle. Sonnen hesitates, but eventually taps out (the method he used is called a Brazilian tap. Where the fighter gives one, small tap that is unnoticable in some cases, and proceeds to attack as the other fighter lets go of the submission.) Sonnen immediatley protests, but neither the ref, Josh Rosenthal, nor Anderson Silva have any of it. Silva is declared the winner by tapout due to a triangle armbar at 3 minutes and ten seconds into the fifth round. Silva retains his belt. Silva thanks his coaches, and, though claiming it not to be an excuse, claims that his doctor protested him competing that night due to injured ribs. To end his night, Silva gives a shout-out to Team Nogueira Jiu-Jitsu. Sonnen is humble in defeat as thanks his coaches, family, and friends.Well folks, I really hope you didn't miss this, because it was an absolutely amazing display of skill. However, if you did just happen to miss it, that's why I'm here. I hope that I broke the bout down thoroughly for everyone to enjoy.'Till next time,Josh Yelverton
