MATTOON - Traffic on Interstate 57 at Illinois Route 16 was re-routed for several hours Saturday morning because of a fatal accident.
After a car hit the back of a bus on the interstate around 6 a.m. Saturday, a man exited the car and was then hit by another vehicle, Mattoon police Chief Jeff Branson said. He said the force of the impact threw the man off the interstate and onto the pavement of Route 16 below.
The man was identified as Joseph Taylor, 48, of Chicago, Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers said. Schniers said he pronounced Taylor dead at the scene.
Illinois State Police closed part of the interstate and routed traffic onto Route 16. Branson said that was so an accident reconstruction expert could investigate the accident scene.
State police are handling the investigation and more information will be released once it's available.
